I'm not sure how to rate this book. First of all, I read it several months ago and never got around to writing up the review - so I don't remember it as well as I would like. Second, this was a free e-Book and in some ways, I believe that I get what I "pay" for and shouldn't expect Shakespeare. Third, there were lots of good things about this book that I still remember. So, I won't go into a full-on review. I do recommend this book and the author. I would imagine that the writing for the series will be even better over time and the main character is quite enjoyable. Her voice is snarky and teen-girl-like, but also mature and logical as would befit the daughter of a cop and a DA. I binge watched seven episodes of Veronica Mars on a recent flight back from Italy. It was my first time seeing it. And I loved it. Then I picked up this book (two nights ago, mind you) and kept thinking, "This is amazing! It's just like Veronica Mars!"Ruby is a super well developed character. I loved the conflict she has with her mother and I was rooting for them to come to terms with each other throughout the whole book. The best friend and Ruby's therapist were also great characters.What lacked a bit for me was the romance plot line but because of Rudy's inability to trust and connect with people, it made sense for this to move as slowly as it did. Overall, great book. Can't wait to read more of Ms. Humphries clever reads.
