About book Keeping Time (2010)

A heart warming story of Daisy, an old woman who travels to America in search of a long lost love or the family he left behind. Her trip enables her to meet American relatives she has never known. Daisy is such a warm hearted old woman her new found relatives can't help but grow to love her quickly. This is an easy read, though the writing style is a bit choppy. My understanding is the author is also a playwright and thus the book has a short stucato rhythm that is a bit off-putting. The novel touches on lots of deep issues that are not developed but solved in a quick, simple fashion. (If life was only that easy). The characters were very one-dimensional. Despite the critique I found the story sweet and enjoyed Daisy' warmth, and querkiness of some of the other characters. I found this book to be a delightful read. The tale of Liverpool-born Daisy and her American cousins kept me turning the pages past my normal 'reading cut-off time'. Daisy lives in Liverpool where her oldest son is determined to sell her home and put her in a senior apartment. Daisy is not ready for this and when she finds a love token from a US soldier she knew during the war, she decides to use the return of it as an excuse to visit her long-lost cousins on Long Island. When she gets to New york, she stays with Elizabeth, a working mother of five. Elizabeth lives a hectic life that leaves her little time to enjoy what is going on around her. Elizabeth's family is smitten with Daisy, especially 13 year old Michael. Michael is going though a rough time but takes Daisy's search for her missing soldier to heart. By the time the book ends, all the characters have changed and each has found new meaning to their lives. This is a sweet little book that will leave you feeling better about life. Recommended. P.S. Thank you Goodreads for sending me this copy!
