About book Karma (2011)

Karma...was an amazing book. It has to be one of the best books I have read so far in my life. I don't really know why I loved it so much, was it because of the Indian culture in this book? or was it because of the way it was written, in a poetry sort of format; free verse? The answer to that question will come to me one day. This book was so amazing that if it was a person then I would marry it(a bit extreme but who cares?). This book is beautiful, heartbreaking, and enlightening all at the same time. When I picked it up I didn't think I'd be able to get into a novel in verse, but before I knew it I was about 75 pages in and totally engrossed in Maya's feelings, experiences, and uncertainty. Depending on which cover you've got, this book is much more dramatic, serious, and heavy than you'd expect. This is not a light "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" story. This is a story of tragedy, fear, loss...but also strength, perseverance, and hope. This book is not, for lack of a better term, girlie. I find it unfortunate that the first two covers (the hot pink hardcover and the flowery paperback), in addition to not really fitting the tone of the story, are likely to discourage teen boys to be seen with this book. This book is a great one for both genders. The newer black and orange cover art is much more fitting to the story and appealing to both girls and boys.

A good description on Indian culture in a rebellious situation of post independent India.
