I read a review that called this book gentle and wise and I think that is the perfect description. The author transports you to a tiny Greek island where you spend a lazy summer with a cast of loving and eccentric characters. Yiayia keeps everyone in line with her gentle touch, careful guidance and mouth watering food. I really felt like I was a guest of Yia-yia's as we sat by the fire and she taught me the deeper meaning in some favorite Greek myths. I cried several times and found myself wanting to book a flight to Greece. Initially I wish the book had ended differently but after sleeping on it I realized it was in fact the perfect ending and I applaud the author for not taking the easy, everything ends happily ever after route. Recommended and waiting for another book by the exciting new writer. This was such a satisfying book - full of laughter and tears. I loved the evocative setting, an isolated Greek island full of community spirit and a simplicity that highlights the important things in life. I loved the coming together over coffee and fabulous food and the mix of memory and wisdom imparted by the sharing of the stories of the heroes and heroines of ancient Greek myths. This will be an author to revisit.
