This book is an exceptional piece of art. It is incredibly impacting and gives you a personal perspective. This book reaches beyond the depths of simply understanding the loss and damage of war and instead reminds you of the love and life in between the moments of destruction. It touches the deepest parts of your soul in hopes that you realize that history was an ugly thing with glimpses of beauty and in those beautiful moments you remember that we are all brothers and sisters who've all sacrificed and loved, who've all lived in moments of peace, and died in our losses. This isn't a tale of war after war or country against country but of brother against brother and sister against sister. As this book has enlightened me, a Roman Catholic, to the very essence of Palestinian culture I thank you in both my way and the way this book has taught me,"May God bless the mind and hands who've wrote such beauty and may He bless your life and all you love". I seem to be one of the few persons who wasn't completely blasted away by this book. I liked (some parts of) it, but I did not completely fell in love with it. I felt that in some parts the book seemed a bit "fake", the events and coincidences felt unnatural to me. Moreover, even if I am not biased regarding the Palestinian cause, I felt that the depiction of all Palestinian characters was good, while Jews characters weren't described much. Anyhow, the story is interesting, and the book surely offers a different, more humanized take on an issue that most people (me included) only know from the news. Personally, I liked the first part of the book best, up to Amal's return to Lebanon. But as soon as Majid turned up in the book, I knew the twist the story would take, and I was pretty sure that I wouldn't like it. And in fact that part was a bit too cheesy for my personal taste, and the end of it obvious. I also did not like the shifting perspective in the story. Most of the story was told in first person from Amal's point of view, but in other chapters the narrator was Yussef, while other chapters still were told in third person.
