About book Justice League Dark, Vol. 1: In The Dark (2012)
OK, so it's always nice to see characters I already like be written with more personal flaws and Milligan always has great dialogue. And I like how the characters don't really like or trust each other. I also start wondering what kind of long-term effects it has on the populace when everyone goes crazy every so often. "All over the world people turn to violence for no apparent reason" and then it's never brought up again.Anyway, looking forward to the next volume. If I could give this a 2.5 stars out of 5, I would. The concept itself is (kind of) intriguing, mostly because so much of the new DC stuff has gotten the "gritty realism" makeover, so the presence of magic was a nice change from that. That being said, the narrative execution was atrocious. There were some serious pacing issues that sometimes bordered on incoherency, and the dialogue for the first two or three issues is just plain awful. I tried starting this book about a month ago, and I had to stop partway through the first issue because the dialogue was just so, so bad. Some of these problems were addressed a few issues in (the dialogue became much less melodramatic, but is still nothing special), but overall, there's not enough here of value for me to recommend this book to, well, anyone, really.
