About book Just Like Us: The True Story Of Four Mexican Girls Coming Of Age In America (2009)

Thinking this book would be like Random Family I decided to give it a try. I thought the book was okay, but I found the author was more present in the book than I would've liked - especially since there was a lot of political talk (which is obvious in this day and age of immigration issues), but as the mayor's wife I think she put in a few too many nods towards her husband. I would've appreciated if the book had been more narrative and novel-like as is the case with Random Family. Overall, it was a good glimpse into the lives of immigrants, both illegal and legal, and it taught me a lot and expanded my world-view about something I thought I knew. One must remember this was a first book for Helen Thorpe. Thought the style was simple the content did keep my interest.I needed more specific factual information in the area of the school system data. There is no way the Denver area school systems were portrayed appropriately. Immigration is a complex issue. The solution is simple. Do not cross the border without proper documents. I hope this finds all the girls in the book as strong, productive, legal women in their communities.

AT least a 3-1/2 but it is so long and somewhat repetitive. Story was good a timely.
