About book Just Friends (2006)

Adrian is weak. The token girlfriend relationship is not a relationship at all, in that Adrian and Alexa's dating and feelings are instant, awkward and poorly constructed. The Jamaican dialect is stupidly and wrongly written (I am Trinidadian). There are too many errors and the story is all over the place. It is written to trope (evil stepmother, evil girlfriend, good sibling, heterosexual relationships not all they're cracked up to be) and is thus an unenjoyable read. This work is transparent and amateurish. It is without real material. This is one of those good stories. You know, the kind that your mind drifts back to. I readily admit that I was a little skeptical at first, since I generally don't read unpublished work. But there was nothing else to do, so I read it. And boy am I glad I did!! Also, I have to say that the author's note in the last chapter that said this story was almost left unfinished gave me a little heart attack as I realized how close I came to not being able to read the ending!I have always been drawn to people who are different and don't fit the 'norm' of society. And this book definitely delivered on that part in the form of Friday, the Hippy. I absolutely fell in love with his character, even though the story is told in first person from his best friend who is too wrapped up in in his love for Friday as a best friend to see Friday as the love of his life. But Adrian's eyes we still get to see exactly who Friday is and how much he cares for Adrian. We also get to see how much Adrian loves Friday, but I continuously felt the need to yell at him "open your eyes! he's perfect for you! everyone else can see it, why can't you!?!" However, this only endeared me more to Adrian, because you have to realize that these are young people, at that age where everything is confusing and still trying to figure themselves out. So, this story is definitely relatable because we've all been there, we've all made mistakes. The best part is when we figure them out, and get the chance to make everything right again. This book is definitely one of good ones. I only wish to see these boys twenty years from now, when they have grown up (and I definitely wouldn't mind some 'adult' scenes, if you get my drift haha). DO read this story. I highly recommend it! (:
