About book Just A Little Run Around The World: 5 Years, 3 Packs Of Wolves And 53 Pairs Of Shoes (2009)

I first read about her in Rosie Darling in the seventies and was delighted to discover that she is still going strong and experiencing life to the full. Written in the first person and in a chatty style, this is an amazingly personal tale, filled with tight observation and total, but selfless, determination to achieve her goal. A travelogue, inspiration and motivational book for anyone looking for more meaning and propose in life. I wish I could give this book 3.5 stars. I more than liked it, but not to the gushy point of liking it. I did not like her writing style, and I wish she'd spent less time on the minutia and more time developing more of a narrative. However, that said, the strength of this book is her infectious gratitude. I expected this book to be about mental strength in endurance running, or filled with musings on grief or losing someone to cancer. While I know she had to be strong as nails to go through what she did and that she went through the grief along the way, what she dwelt on was how incredibly kind people are. In this day and age, when all we hear about in the media is how awful our fellow humans are, Pope presents a convincing argument that this is not the case at all. People as individuals are actually willing to help and extend kindness to others whenever they can, despite their personal life situations. So, while I went into this book wanting it to be about running, it ended up being something different, but more universally applicable beyond just running enthusiasts.
