About book Juliet In August (2010)

The second book in a row I read about failing families on failing farms, interestingly. Some reviewers found this novel dull; I found it quiet and at times almost soothing in its day to day detailing of the lives of a select few of the residents of this small town. The point of view of the book essentially switches from one character to another throughout the day, cycling through them repeatedly until we reach the end. Some storylines worked better than others, and one pretty much completely fell flat for me and I dreaded those sections. If you're looking for action and intrigue, I would not recommend this book. Aside from one big plot twist, a whole lot of nothing out of the ordinary happens (which is rather the point, I think). If you're looking for reflections on life as it is lived by ordinary people in insular, economically depressed communities, this book may be just the ticket. Particularly recommended for anyone undergoing a mild midlife crisis. A compilation of short stories that connect to create a charming story as a whole. The stories of the simple town folk of Juliet are endearing, an simplistic in such a descriptive manner - you actually get a feel for the town and its residents. The stories aren't outrageous or controversial - just everyday life depicted in small town. Ms. Warren's writing style reminds me of Alice Munro and Carol Shields. Warren does a splendid job of depicting life in a small town. Her characters are written in such a compassionate manner with great detail to the issues each tackle. This is a charming read that transports you to a small hamlet and gives you a sense of being a member of the community. A great comfort read.
