The facts of this book are amazing. It really drives home the idea that our third president and the author of our Declaration of Independence was a slave owner. How does one rectify the idea of all men being created equal and owning hundreds of slaves? Especially when that one is the illegitimate son of a master and his slave. Excellent writing, impeccable facts, and thought provoking subject matter make this book important. A strong, thorough take on the inner and outer lives of two of Jefferson's sons with slave Sally Hemings and two of their friends. This is an important glimpse into the truth about our founding fathers' lives. They were imperfect, great, and extremely hypocritical humans with good and bad sides to them. A very interesting and highly readable piece of historical fiction.Recommend to anyone 4th grade and up.
A decent historical fiction book for young readers. Addresses the idea of Freedom versus Love.

Good book, but boring at the beginning. Sad at the end. How where people so cruel?
