About book It Worked For Me: In Life And Leadership (2012)
A wonderful book from my favorite national figure. We are all poorer because Colin decided not to run for president. His people oriented pragmatism is sorely needed more each day. This excellent book on leadership is the distilled wisdom from 50 years of service and public life. Every leader, manager, and citizen should read this book. Colin is the only ROTC graduate (from CCNY) to become Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. As the son of hard working Jamaican immigrants, he epitomizes the value that immigrants bring to revitalizing our country. Serving as a national security adviser to Ronald Reagan, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and Secretary of State under George Bush, Powell gained a well deserved reputation as a candid and wise moderate. Powell’s 13 rules (e.g. “Avoid having your ego so close to your position that when your position falls, your ego goes with it.”) should be on everyone’s desk. This book also documents his abilities to learn from failures (e.g. his famous UN WMD speech before the invasion of Iraq). "It worked for me," which he summarized at a Smithsonian speech we attended recently, illustrates how hard work and focusing on people will work for you as it did for him. This will make a great gift for everyone you care about. Anyone who has been successful in both the military and in politics has to be worth listening to, in my opinion. Colin Powell is an intelligent and sensitive leader. This book makes it obvious that he has studied and thought deeply about questions of leadership and come up with some useful answers. Definitely should be read by serious students of leadership. I like that he has been there and done it.

An insightful book from General Powell. I had the pleasure of meeting him at a lecture recently.
