About book It Starts With Food: Discover The Whole30 And Change Your Life In Unexpected Ways (2012)

This book literally changed my life!I can't recommend it enough! As a food-addict, it was an eye-opener for how I viewed food, meals and everything I originally 'thought' I knew about nutrition, health and genetics. This book gave a scientific perspective about the types of food we ingest and how it affects the body on a scientific and chemical/hormonal level. I think this book should be a required read in the education system, it was THAT informative and compelling. I could rant on about how this book changed my life for the better, but there just isn't enough character space for it all. :) I listened to this on audio. Their philosophy felt a lot like Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food. In a nutshell, the foods you eat either make you more or less healthy, and we should only eat foods that make us more healthy. Sounds simple. Complicated business these days. The only thing I felt they had to offer in addition to Pollan's book is they get way more into the science of how certain foods affect your body, brain, and emotions. The Hartwigs use the "Paleo" diet for the basis of their Whole 30 program—a 30 day "cleanse" which basically consists of meat, eggs, seafood, lots of veggies, and some fruit. No grains, dairy, sugars of any kind (not even honey or agave), processed foods of any kind, and many oils. After the Whole 30 you're supposed to experiment adding back dairy and grains individually to see how you respond to them. While I'm certain that processed foods are not at all good for me, I'm skeptical that all grains should be eliminated from my diet, but I intend to try to Whole 30 mostly because I'm curious. I don't need to lose weight and I generally eat well and feel good, but I'd like to see if this will help with my quality of sleep, energy levels, and mood—all things they swear will improve as a result of the Whole 30. Interesting book if you want to get really deep into the science of what your food is doing to your body and brain, but a lot of their info, resources, and guidelines about the Whole30 program are on their website at whole30.com for free.
