About book It All Started With A Lima Bean (2000)

A very cute new adult romance. The story intertwines the lives of Abby, a kindergarten teacher, and Caleb, a famous writer. Both characters have experienced tremendous loss and have vowed to never let anyone else in. When the two meet each other, sparks fly and neither know how to handle their feelings toward the other. It's a sweet read with a meddling mother-in-law, a precious kindergartner and some not so nice "Power Mom's." It's not your typical romance with lots of sex and it actually contains no sex scenes whatsoever. The story is likeable because of the plot, the characters and how they come together and explore each other when they finally commit to give each other a go. Definitely a sweet read when you're looking for a break from books that are all sex and some substance. It's a sweet story with very likable characters in endearing, realistic and sympathetic situations. The author shows potential and just needs a little polishing of her writing style that may very well happen with more experience or maybe a stronger editor or perhaps a combination of both. Some scenes in this story were overly described by strings of adjectives: settings, outfits, even the driveway and houses. I want to read a novel, not a catalog or a real estate ad. And I have to say, I really, really, didn't need to read that our main gal was thankful she wore a pantyliner because she laughed so hard a little pee came out. That whole sentence should have been deleted. It didn't fit the character's conservative personality and it most certainly didn't belong in a contemporary romance novel. The sprinkling of typos were distracting, like this doozy: "He slid the emerald and diamond ring onto her finger and it fir perfectly." The above-mentioned irks typically would have made me flounce on finishing the story but I liked the characters well enough to stick it out to the end.
