About book Io, Ibra (2011)

What a shocker of a book... The language is dumbed down in what looks like a crude attempt to capture the "street" background from where he came, the author turns out to be even more egotistical and self-obsessed than the football star stereotype (inciting feelings of quiet rage, so on that level quite stimulating!), and although he tries to persuade us that his various battles in life are meaningful, instead he inspires either revolt or apathy.I'm instinctively apprehensive about sporting autobiographies but I had heard that this wouldn't be like the rest, it would be "told as it is" without the clichés. Still, on this evidence I think footballers should let their football do the talking. I was already partial to Zlatan because I like my footballers boisterous and cocky with the skills to back it up, and also preferably from rough backgrounds (cf Balotelli), but I'm still surprised by how much I enjoyed this biography. Granted, reading about how a rich footballer feels disrespected because he's the lowest-paid player at his club is absurd, but set in the absurd world of football it makes sense. It's also really interesting how he got shat on by the Swedish clubs he played for because he was the 'brown' kid. Race is weird. Also, he had a pug named Hoffa which he would buy a pizza for every night. This is amazing.

Sure, Zlatan may be nuts, but that certainly makes for an entertaining read.
