This short novel was a disappointment for me after enjoying so much "St-St-Stuffed" and "Shane and Trey" by the same author. Even more so as this time it is so neatly edited with no typos or mistakes to be detected.This time angst was simply too much for a romance. There is so much anguish, so many unspoken words and feelings. The leads are so afraid to get hurt and to hurt somebody else that they simply fail to express themselves, to be alive. I think Ms Sunday aimed at a finely shaded watercolour but it all ends by being dark, shadowy. Even those moments which are supposed to be happy feel like an isolated sunbeam peaking from stormy, greyish clouds.While writing is good, pacing is slow. The supernatural element, original though it is, feels only partially put to use in the plot.I am afraid I shall not be rereading this anytime soon. So, last week or so when I was browsing the kindle freebies over on amazon this book popped up (it’s no longer free by the way…). It seemed interesting enough for me to snag a copy…with no real intention of reading. But somehow it had grabbed my attention and I found myself starting the book much sooner than I’d possibly thought. It was a good call.Rune is in many ways just like any other teenage boy, but in some ways he’s really not. His mother died when he was young, and after a stay with circus folk he’s been roaming around all on his own. There is something really unique about Rune – he’s invisible. Sometimes he can will people to see him, but the consequences from that has taught him not to. The loneliness sometimes gets to him, but it’s something he has to deal with. One day, as he decides he can’t take it anymore, he’s sitting on a precipice about to let go of everything, when a dog comes running up to him. The dog almost falls, and he saves it, and soon the dog’s owner comes into sight. But what is more surprising – it appears that the boy can see him. Scott is a lonely boy in need of a friend, and an invisible friend is better than none at all…besides, there’s something special about this boy. Something besides his magic…The story is rather simple and straight forward, but it’s sweet, and apart from some minor spelling/grammar errors pretty well written. The language is sweet and the story engaging. When Scott asks Rune about his invisibility and Rune says “I can’t really explain it” I was a bit pissed, because that is such an author cop-out, but then as the story progresses Rune does explain to the best of his ability, so I guess it’s excusable. I loved how nothing was ever overanalyzed or over clarified; it was just clean and minimalistic. It’s not that common in literature, but it suited this story. Only the things that mattered where given page time, and that was kind of refreshing actually. There was plenty of tension and sweetness between Scott and Rune, and just a little bit magic as well. There was some minor angst too, but nothing overly painful. I really liked this book; it was sweet like a summer’s breeze, but still not vapid or lacking substance. Very nice.
