About book Invictus: Nelson Mandela And The Game That Made A Nation (2009)

I read this book some years ago after hearing a radio interview with the author. I think the movie was in development stage then and by the time I was reading the book it came out.As some reviewers stated, the first half is devoted to display a landscape of SA politics and conflicts around 1993 and the second half is devoted to the rugby world cup. The whole book has the approach of showing Mandela's character through this story. It's the story that's so appealing to me. The sole idea that a rugby game can save a country from a self annihilation war and chaos is absolutly ridiculous, nonsense, childish, naive... and so on. The thing is: that's exactly what happened. It was the right thing to do, it took a lot of courage, they did it marvelously and it worked. That's the lesson to me In my numerous travels to South Africa, in my previous consulting company, I was introduced to this book by a client of mine. I remember buying this book in the Sandton Mall during the world cup soccer frenzy of 2010 and immediately the significance of the pride of the south african flags on the cars, houses and streets of Johannesburg, took a deeper meaning. This book is about the genius of Nelson Mandela and how he got a divided nation together. There could have been so many paths available to a young nation, but due to the long term vision of a charismatic leader, the path chosen was of reconciliation and forgiveness. Sports is the vehicle for the reconciliation and its a compelling story, i must say. Its been made into a movie - Invictus, but before watching the movie, do read the book to get a larger context.
