This book is a fascinating look at the lives of Afghani village women - how they live, think, behave in public and in the privacy of their own homes and walled compounds. The author allows the reader to see their faith compared to the author's Christian faith and the contrast of world view and primary assumptions. It is engagingly written and I learned a great deal. Wisely, the author is careful to note frequently that in her observations she is only describing Afgani ideas, not generalized Moslem ideas. Really interesting, I have learnt a bit about Afghanistan and a bit about the Muslim religion by reading this book. The author is quite good at explaining some of the differences between what Christians believe and what Muslims believe without being critical or judgemental of either religion despite being a Christian herself. Her time as part of an NGO was obviously quite challenging but by the sounds of things, a very worthwhile experience.
