Helprin is unique: romantic, philosophical, verbose, beautiful. He doesn't merely tell a story: he immerses you in his world and thoughts and sense of the unity of all things and the love of New York. The story itself is riveting, and the characters deep and lovable, but you get so much more when you let the storyteller transport you into their thoughts, sensations, and convictions. I expected the ending, but fought it; I'm still fighting it. Fabulous writing! Love and war...themes of Helprin's historical novel set dually in New York City & Europe.Helprin's writing is a joy with its wit, philosophical comments, historical notes & romantic portrayal of Harry & Catherine. Helprin successfully delivers an intimate love story, tale of familial bonding & realistic account of a soldier's life in WWII.Few books call me to read them twice: this one does!

Beautiful descriptions, but depressing. Don't look for a happy ending here.
