About book In Het Diepe: Over Zwarte Schapen, Familie En De Liefde (2011)
I picked this book up free from a 'take a book leave a book' shelf, and thought it looked like a good chicklit novel to pass the time with.I'ts a good book, one of the few chicklit novels I've read lately that didn't leave me wanting to strangle someone. It was well written, mostly believable and the main character didn't leave me wanting to murder her. Evie is ballsy but vulnerable and practical, without being dull. She is a woman, not some silly girl with a bag from Gucci and a love of cocktails and sparkles. The story was incredibly predictable, but, most chicklit is. I give Diamond credit for fooling me into thinking that Surfer-dude was going to be the romantic interest. The descriptions of Cornwall made me almost weep for want of my past holidays there, and there was enough by way of subplots to keep me reading. The ending was very twee, but again, that's a staple of the genre, and despite what I often say, I do love chicklit for that very reason. The one downside was that it wasn't a very funny book, and I like a lot of humor with my soppy romances. But, on all other fronts, a pretty solid novel with some lovely touches. I loved this book. When a book only takes me a day and half to read, then I consider them as really good - the boring books take so much longer to get through. I can't remember if I have read Lucy Diamond before - but I will certainly look for more of her books. Evie has inherited her Aunt's Beach Cafe and she leaves her drab little life in Oxford to go down to Cornwall to run it - proving to her family that she is not just their "little Black Sheep", but a responsible, independant and capable young woman, who in the process of making a go of the Cafe also becomes much loved to the people in the village. At first they were wary of her, but she soon turned their attitudes around. I really recommend this to lovers of Carole Matthews, Jill Mansell, Trish Ashley and Emily Harvale.
