More like 3.5 stars, actually. A very fast read. Do not pick up if you're looking for something with an intricate plot!What this book does offer is a journey through the narrator's everyday life. And even if you have nothing in common with her, you will be able to empathise with how she feels about very many things. She talks about her blinkered (in some ways) upbringing, how her views changed as she grew up. She does this without any drama, just states these things in an idly-musing sort of way.She discusses the various men she's come across, relationships and friendships she's had, her son, present husband, ex-husband, brothers, parents, parents-in-law.. Well, lots of people. But never does it become an overdose of people. It all fits. Because you slip into the habit of seeing her life through her eyes (in most cases). Of course, in some instances, you do feel like a bystander viewing this woman with a mixture of indulgence and a feeling of oh-my-god-can't-she'see-how-irrational-she's-being. Although it was easy to get through, I did have a problem with the occasional grammatical error here and there. I know this might sound like nit-picking; but just like Diana Joseph, I too border on obsessive behaviour. Only, mine is that I cannot simply ignore grammatical errors. Anyway, the language is not what interested me. Simple sentences, nothing fancy. It's the human-ness, without pretence, that struck a chord. If being conflicted, contradictory, and confused can be funny, this memoir accomplishes all that and more. Joseph has written a most offbeat, irreverent, and honest memoir about womanhood, motherhood, relationships, and just plain being human. Best of all she shows the rare ability to question her own thoughts and assumptions with wry humor. If you like the idea of a satirical memoir, try this cute little book.
