This is one of the first book I won on Goodreads Giveaways, and I was really excited about it--until I realized that the average review was only 3 stars. I hesitated to read the book because of the lukewarm reviews. For some reason, I decided to pick the book up this week, and I can honestly say that I really enjoyed it. I expected a mediocre read and instead was treated to a compelling read. I loved the characters--I especially loved their flaws. I wept aloud as I read about 9/11--perhaps because the character recalling the event had such mixed feelings about the person she lost. There is nothing overtly "happy" about anything that happens in the book; however, there is everything overtly "human". I definitely recommend it! If you are fascinated by theater and how much of what a playwright conveys is from his or her real life, well, this book won't exactly give you an answer. But "The Lake Shore Limited" is a strong and thoughtful story, set in the voice of several characters whose lives are affected in different ways by the same play, which is also the name of this novel. Sue Miller is a lovely writer and infuses her work with lots of wisdom, and this touches on the aftermath of 9/11. I wonder if her fiction is from her own life or, well, like a play perhaps, fiction entirely?
