I liked this book. A young thief and a man called, "The Knife", go to steal something from a house. After it is stolen by the boy, "The Knife" kills him. Later the boy wakes up. He meets up with some scholars who are working in an old library. They hide him from someone who is looking for him since he stole the item from the house. There is also a hawk involved. It was an interesting book. I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series. This is book # 1. I think this series has had a fantastic start. Maybe plot building isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it's definitely mine! Especially when there are lines in the book such as: "It was the third hour after midnight, when the tide of blood is at its lowest ebb, when the soul sinks so low in slumber that the sleeper drifts near death." I mean, seriously?? That's awesome writing, right there, I don't care who you are! ;) I loved reading about Jute and the other pickpocket children in one chapter and then the next chapter is describing Levoreth's point of view who is (possibly) the earth anbeorun in the story. As the reader, you can tell these carefully described threads are being slowly woven into themselves and, once complete, will be a glorious tapestry depicted through story. An excellent read! So glad I found this trilogy!!!
