Set in England in 1831, after the time period of Pride and Prejudice. Two very opposite views of England in the 1800's. Mary is the daughter of a farmer and his wife who abuse their daughters. None of them can read or write or even think it's necessary to learn. Mary is lame so can't do as much work in the fields as her sisters, so she is sent to work at the vicars, while the money she earns goes to her father. At the vicarage she learns to read and write but has to pay for it with night time visits from the vicar. The story is written by Mary with her basic writing skills and is about the last year of her life. Once she learned to read, she murdered the vicar when he came to her room. She doesn't mind having to die because she was able to read. Wow. Uniquely told story set in 1831. Ultimately relevant story of timeless class distinction and power dynamics.Nary an uppercase letter or quotation mark exist in the writing of this tale in which sparseness actually enhances the character development and plot rendering.Painful, haunting, engrossing. Apologies to all around me who I have ignored during my absorption of this book in the past 16 hours.
