About book Il Club Delle Ricette Segrete (2010)

Lilly and Val are childhood friends with complicated parents. Val's mother is agoraphobic and Lilly's father is her psychiatrist, who takes a vested interest in Val's education and future. They grow up in the late 1960's and into the 70's. At a young age, they create "The Recipe Club"- just the two of them, exchanging recipes back and forth. The format of the book is primarily letters between the two, including the recipes. I suppose this book is sweet, but it feels very predictable and cliche. The writing is average and the story is... okay. It's good for a break from some heavier reading. Food: breakfast you made for your mom when you were five or six years old. It probably included a few bits of shell in the eggs and the toast was a little burnt, but it was a good effort. Dang. Really wish I had read the reviews or at least looked at the review rating before buying this book. I had it on my "to buy/to read" shelf for years, since it sounded like an interesting premise. The execution? Not so much. The story tells of Lilly and Val, two childhood friends who reunite and communicate with each other mostly by email and recipes. The reader is treated to glimpses of their current status and their childhood friendship, as well as the recipes they shared along the away. The first few pages definitely had me, but unfortunately I spotted the cliche immediately. It's been a while since I've read the back cover, but I'm sure more astute readers will probably be able to pick up on the cliched story based on that.I stuck with it for about 50 pages. While not a rule I strictly hold to, I could see it wasn't getting better and happened to see I looked down at page 48, and decided that was it. I flipped through and skimmed to the end and yep, I was right. The story devolved into a cliched tale and ending that probably won't surprise anyone. The writing is pretty transparent and telegraphs what will happen, never a good sign. I hadn't realized this was chick lit. Normally it's a genre I avoid, and with good reason. Unfortunately this just didn't help my prejudices. If you enjoy cooking and chick lit, might like this. There are several recipes, but I didn't buy this book for that. My only consolation is that I bought this on bargain. Do the same or borrow from the library for a beach read/something you don't mind leaving behind on your vacation if you have to.
