When the Game Was Ours is a very good novel/read which gives us an in depth look into the legendary rivalry of two basketball greats Larry Bird and Magic Johnson. The book spans from the moment the two first met at the NCAA championship game, to their pro days, and even their post playing days. The two started out as fierce rivals and ultimately wound up becoming the best of friends. Throughout it all they always respected each other and used what the other did as motivation in order to perfect their craft. I personally loved this book because I like basketball. It was well written and the sequence in which the author portrays the events is spot on. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in basketball or sports in general. Overall the book was easy to comprehend and I really enjoyed reading it. When the Game Was Ours is a very enjoyable read which has duel chronicles of both Larry Bird and Magic Johnson from their young playing days, college, pros, and post careers. The two went from fierce rivals to friends over the course of their careers but through it all, they always respected the other and used what the other did as motivation.My only critique of the book was a minor one by the author late in the book. The author mentions that Magic and Michael Jackson found themselves at the same function in the early 90's and it was soon after Jackson had broken away from the Jackson 5 and had released the album "Off the Wall". This first solo album of Jackson's was released in 1979, well before the early 90's when he was one of the biggest superstars in the world. I know it has nothing to do with Magic or Larry, but somebody should have caught this blunder before publishing.But, I highly recommend the book, especially to those who grew up when these two ruled the NBA.
