About book Identical (2013)

We will call that a 3.25. It started a bit slow, but after the major plot twist at around page 200, I paid more attention! I always like Turow's ability to surprise me, and he did that with a bang here. There was also a lot of implausible stuff that I had trouble believing, but it was definitely entertaining because of those things.I will just say that I did NOT like him using Sandy Stern and Raymond Horgan as two-bit extras. Since they weren't the stars, I would have preferred them to stay out of it altogether, despite their inevitability in Kindle County, since their introduction led me to believe they would become important later in the story, which simply wasn't the case. The wondering and waiting became a distraction, especially because I kept harking back to the events of the novels in which they did play lead, trying to suss out whether the timeline here would match with what happened to them in those books (I don't have them on hand to check, but actually I think not!).I also wasn't sure what the depiction of Evon's love life had to do with the rest of the story--pretty much nothing, as it turns out. Maybe he did it with a future story in mind? I liked her character but again, those particular personal details didn't lend themselves to furthering the story. At least Tim's memories of his relationship with his wife lent themselves to comparison and empathy with some of the other characters and deepened the story, but Evon's relationship with Heather was a dead end.All in all, a good one, but not quite on a level with Presumed Innocent. There is a murder, identical twins, DNA capabilities that didn't exist at the time of the crime, family feuds, organized crime connections, and family loyalty all thrown into the blender of Turow's artistry. Various names and possibilities pop out of the mixture, only to be tossed aside for new possibilities. There are enough twists in the plot to make even the most experienced of mystery solvers dizzy. I'm still unraveling threads and unwinding clues in my mind, even after I've finished the book.
