This is our introduction to Lord Anthony Hetheridge and his introduction to DS Kate Wakefield. To say these are two very different people is putting too fine a point on it. Tony is coming up on his 60th birthday and Kate is in her early 30’s; Tony is from the aristocracy as it exists today and Kate is from the wrong side of the tracks (which is probably an Americanism that doesn’t apply here); Tony is working beneath his status, Kate managed to pull herself up to become something her family would never have expected. But these very different people are great together. Add in the amazingly snarky Deepal “Paul” Bhar, and a lovely group of secondary characters and you have a cast of characters that you can’t go wrong with.The mystery was well-done and had me guessing until the end of the story with nice little hints throughout. I’ve read a lot of British mysteries over the years; most of Elizabeth George’s books and everything written by Anne Perry along with multiple others so I’m pretty well-versed in this type of book. I can say that this stood up well to those books, definitely a fun read. OK, I feel a bit hoodwinked. The kindle store recommended this mystery to me and I snapped it up (I'm a marketer's dream!). It had all of the ingredients of a good series, but the dialogue just wasn't believable and the cast of characters never really came together. Then, it ended abruptly on about page 160. Seriously? Such a slim volume never would have grabbed me in a brick and mortar store.
Loved this story, read all three of the books available by this author in one weekend.
