About book I Wish I Were Engulfed In Flames: My Insane Life Raising Two Boys With Autism (2012)

I agree with all the one star reviews - this was a miserable book. I had to skim to the end. As the parent of a child with autism, I was really disappointed - and disgusted - by the book. Does autism produce funny moments? Of course. Should we laugh at them? Of course (if we couldn't laugh we would all gone insane - Jimmy Buffett). But funny moments should be told with empathy and compassion, not with exploitative crudity and insensitivity. There isn't enough room for me to express all the reasons I loved this book. The narrator was incredibly good, I actually thought it was the author until the end and the credits were read! This wonderful and wacky mom tells the stories of her life, living with two sons who have autism but who are very different in their functioning. She is brutally honest and my husband and I laughed so hard during some of her stories, I actually thought " You should be doing stand up about your life, Jeni!" Now I need to let you know that Jeni is a free thinker and a free doer and some of her humor or ideas may seem crass or downright trashy to some people. She hates Republicans, close minded people, and people who don't try to be tolerant of people who are different, no matter how they are different. She is an amazingly dedicated mom who loves her boys fiercely and is their biggest advocate. It is educational, entertaining, informative and just a wonderful book to read or listen to. I highly recommend the audio version.
