About book I Wish I Could Say I Was Sorry... (2014)

Susie Kelly manages to make a heartbreaking story into a beautiful work of art. I Wish I Could Say I’m Sorry is her memoir of growing up in Kenya and moving to England as an adult and mother. She immediately endears readers, making them connect with her as a young girl. I was cheering her on to the very end, hoping this young lady would have a positive turn of luck. Through each difficult challenge Kelly fought back and managed to make a life for her family. It’s really a lovely read. I read this book with real interest, because I'd gotten to know Susie through her travel writings. By modern standards, some of the emotional brutality of life for a child in the mid twentieth century was normal. But this does not make it any less painful. And the exotic atmosphere of Susie's younger days in Kenya added an almost mythical element to the memoir. I identified with her in many ways (in addition to our already discovered love of adventure). Now I want the transition to the Susie I know- the one with a sense of humor, an ability to love and be loved.A poignant story of growing up with very little help along the way. It will touch your heart.

A very raw, honest autobiography of a not very happy life.
