About book I Know Who You Are And I Saw What You Did: Social Networks And The Death Of Privacy (2012)

I Know Who You Are and I Saw What You Did: Social Media and the Death of Privacy by Lori Andrews will tell you who many social media users are and what many of them did, particularly when Facebook removed privacy controls causing posts intended to be shared with friends to be seen by “friends of friends,” and personal descriptions to be seen by “liked” products and services. As Andrews points out, even members who are willing to work at maintaining their own privacy controls are discouraged by the 45,000-word Facebook policy statement. Andrews has assembled a fascinating collection of anecdotes on social media woes from commercial sales of personal information to introduction of social media posts as evidence in divorce courts. Her proposed solution, a global “Social Media Constitution” seems a bit naive, however, and more information on privacy safeguards used in European countries would have been a welcome addition. The main agenda behind this book is the push for much needed legislation surrounding what can/can't be done with online information. Although I am relatively savvy when it comes to protecting my privacy online, parts of this book really unnerved me. Not only are companies collecting and selling personal data without permission, they are not being held accountable for providing accurate information. The judicial system is all over the map with what online material they will allow in the courtroom due to limited lawmaking. The most alarming cases shared by Andrews include stories of personal slander and harassment that have ruined lives and careers. This is recommended reading whether you are all over social networks or hesitant to build an online persona.
