About book I Beat The Odds: From Homelessness, To The Blind Side, And Beyond (2011)
I Beat The Odds: From Homelessness, To The Blind Slide is a story about a football player named Michael Oher. He was the star in the movie called The Blind Side. The movie depicts his life growing up in hardship as a youth. Michael Oher branched out from the projects in Memphis. His life had went down hill and he strived to open up many opportunities for him as possible so he can't make it out of the projects. Also, Michael Oher went from being a homeless boy from the projects of Memphis to playing in the NFL. The story is being told through Michael Oher's words and thoughts. I like many things about this book. One extreme thing I like about this book is that I and many others can relate to what his life was like and how difficult it is. In the story I liked how Michael Oher didn't let where he from bring him down. Also, I like learning about other people journeys and how hard it was for them. Reading this helped me let go of my past and strive my self to move forward and push to be someone in life. The novel is very interesting and I give it a rate of 5 out of 5. Reading this books has changed my life completely. It showed me that any one can be something no matter what. I liked to recommend this book to people who enjoy reading about other peoples struggles and what they had to overcome. I really enjoyed this book and I hope people go and read this novel. I Beat the Odds: From Homelessness, to The Blind Side, and Beyond by Michael Oher was a moving book. The book is filled with realistic events that are real to most kids growing up in the inner city living in poverty. The story is told by a strong boy name Michael, who was living with his single drug addicted mom and his siblings. Michael mom was always on drugs and she even left the kids home for weeks. Michael would take care of his siblings when she was gone. They were back and forth from house to house in their neighborhood. The author, Michael Oher, wrote this book to connect with kids who are living against adversity like Michael and his siblings did. To remind the young adult audience that they are not alone and are the only ones going through it. I could even connect to this book in some ways. The impact the book has on its audience is very touching. The book covers very emotional events and some may find them eye opening. An eye opening thing that happened in the book was when Michael said, “If you know where your next meal is coming from, you are not poor.” (Michael 1). He said that because people say they poor because they don’t have their wants. You don’t need your wants in life; all you need is your needs. Furthermore, the book was very captivating. Oher wrote the book so that it would appeal to young adults. At times I found teary eyed because of what Michael and his siblings had to go through. The book had an edgy street side to it, so that the young understood it and could relate to it more. The book made me reflect on times in my life that I had it rough. I did relate to Michael in the book because at times I do feel like I am all alone and nobody cares. This book will have everlasting value as long as it’s around. I Beat The Odds: From Homelessness, to The Blind Side, and Beyond by Michael Oher was well written, although Oher crammed a lot of events in. It seemed that he wanted to put so much into the book and cover a lot of time throughout the book. That’s the only negative about the book because it was so much to process when reading. However, the story is extremely easy to read. I Beat The Odds: From Homelessness, to The Blind Side, and Beyond very dramatic. It was inspiring when Michael said, ““Don't ever allow yourself to feel trapped by your choices. Take a look at yourself. You are a unique person created for a specific purpose. Your gifts matter. Your story matters. Your dreams matter. You matter” because he been through so much (Flake 66). This book definitely kept you wanting to read more when you trying to put it down. The weakest strength in I Beat The Odds: From Homelessness, to The Blind Side, and Beyond that the book covers too many events. The book was too short for how many events took place. The greatest strength in this book is everything seems so real. The book is like a reality show playing on TV. It keeps you wanting more and more everything you read it. The part of the book that stood out the most was when Michael said, "... Kinda thought I already was” because he thought he was already in the family (Michael 76). I would recommend this book to a friend because it teaches you about hardships in life. Just because things don’t go your way, you have to still stay strong and proceed. As the reader, you will go through many types of emotions. You will never get bored of reading this book. Michael Oher has a lot of similar books to I Beat The Odds: From Homelessness, to The Blind Side, and Beyond, which I would also recommend to friends. Overall, I would give the book a 4 ½ star and I will most likely to read it again. The title represents what is going to happen in the book because Michael was having a hard time going through life and she was “I Beat The Odds: From Homelessness, to The Blind Side, and Beyond”.
