In this tale, Otter opens a "toast restaurant" and makes her stuffed bear friend the chef. When he makes more mistakes in the "business" than Otter likes, Bear gets fired (and Giraffe takes his place as head chef). Meanwhile, Otter Keeper returns from work and spends a long night helping Otter try to locate Bear (whom she has lost during her pre-Otter-Keeper's-return efforts to pick up her toys). So, in her missing Bear, Otter begins to learn a longing for friendship and (the reader hopes) how not to blame others for their mistakes. In the end, however, Otter (just like so many of her human counterparts)decides, only, to shift blame for "when things go wrong" to another playmate. Poor Giraffe!Bright, colorful illustrations make these pages a bit visually busy but, the strong kid-appeal element, here, is the potential for racus sessions of object-identification among the 18-month to 3-year set. This picture book is the story of how Otter arrived on Otter Keeper's doorstep and the adventures that followed. Otter gradually became friends with Otter Keeper and Teddy, a stuffed animal. While Otter Keeper is at work, Otter and Teddy open a toast restaurant which ends up in a total mess. Otter blames Teddy, but when he is missing, he realizes how much he needs his friend. The cute illustrations are detailed and endearing.
