A realistic portrayal of what it's like to watch someone you love suffer from rapid-cycle manic depression. Some may say it's a bit sparse or unengaging but that, unfortunately, is reflective of the nature of the situation. It really is quite desolate and makes you question your identity as well as everything we know about consciousness. Glad for the Postscript and Sally's objectivity with regards to the illness in the end. So heartbreaking, so beautiful. A father's experience when his daughter's mental illness first manifests itself. This is such a sensitive subject, so difficult to write about, and told with so much compassion and warmth. Yet never does the warmth feel like it is compromising the integrity of the experience or whitewashing the horrors. The human flaws of more shameful reactions that such chaos brings out in the family members are told with no holds barred, as ugly and beautiful as it is. Greenberg's ability to forgive himself makes us all want to forgive ourselves for our own flawed love. What a beautiful message that is!
