About book How To Write Short: Word Craft For Fast Times (2013)
I found myself wishing "How to Write Short" had been a textbook for one of my college or high school English classes. The exercises at the end of each chapter (dubbed "grace notes") sounded like so much more fun than the usual homework assignment.I enjoyed the examples and anecdotes packed into this book. Unfortunately, if your goal is to become a better writer, just reading this book won't get you there. For it to have any real impact, you'd actually have to practice what it preaches, which is why this book would be so great as a text for a class. Rare is the writer or aspiring writer who would do more than a couple of the exercises without a deadline or a class assignment as motivation. Have you ever picked up a book, started to read it and realize that everything you were reading just made sense? This is exactly what I felt like as I read this book. While nothing was "new" to me in the sense that I had never heard it, this book was able to put all the pieces together and show me just how many bad habits (or maybe excuses) I have picked up over the years when it comes to writing. Thank you Mr. Clark for writing this book and I hope many other writers do like I did and read it from cover to cover.
