About book How To Get Out Of Your Own Way (2011)

Tyrese breaks it down for us, saying everything we've already (maybe subconsciously) known, but PUTS IT IN OUR FACE to cause action!!! If you are ready to take an honest look at yourself, your life and the choices that you've made that have put you in a holding pattern, this book will change your life. If you are not ready to take honest inventory of the choices you've made in life, move onto something else. Gibson's: How To Get Out of Your Own WayA few months ago I saw Singer, Actor and Model Tyrese being interviewed on Windy City Live and he peaked my interest when he started to discuss his recent New York Times best selling book "How To Get Out of Your Own Way!"When I went searching to buy the book, I looked at the cover and said to myself, what could this guy tell me to motivate me to be a better man and person, so I passed up buying it. Fast forward to May 3, 2012, I had passed one of my certification test and was feeling good about myself and just so happen, when I got in my SUV, Tyrese's cut "Sweet Lady" came on V103. I went right over the South Holland public library and checked out the last copy of this PHENOMENAL book! From the Author's Note to the Acknowledgement, Tyrese truly impressed me with his "what you see is what you get" writing skills and his deep transparency and testimonies! He discusses his life (from childhood to Hollywood) and how it's a everyday struggle for him to be be the best Tyrese that he can be. He tells the reader that early on he knew that he would not be a product of his Watt (California) neighborhood and how he always had a knack for being in the presence of greatness. He discusses his family and professional life in detail to give evidence of how you as a singular person are the "Captain of your own ship!" As I read the book, Tyrese became a "best friend in my head" who was telling me his story to help me with some of the things that I'm dealing with (i.e.: an upcoming divorce, my relationship with my daughter, career endeavors and the weight issue!) FYI: Did you all know that when he made the movie "Waste Deep" he weighed a 250 pounds. He is also recently divorced, building a powerful career and has a loving bond with his only child (daughter Shayla). I was like damn, we are are truly "twins" in my head (you know dark skin, big teeth and big personalities..lol!)Anyway, the 2 things that truly stood out in my head about this book was his mentor/friendship with Actor Will Smith! He discusses how Will changed his life for the better. Will told him that he had to start taking his career more seriously because 1. God gave him a gift and 2. people in Hollywood are counting on Tyrese to help feed their families. What Will was saying was that "Hey Tyrese, when producers and directors are hiring you, they want the best shaped Tyrese because a good looking Tyrese gets women in the movie seats and the more women in the seat means more money and more money means the cast and crew make more money to feed their families!" That was so powerful to me when I read that! The other part of the book was Chapter 4: Who are your Five People! What he addressed in this chapter was again Will Smith told him: that if you look at the 5 closes people to you, you are basically seeing a mirror image of yourself (like it or not) and if you don't like what you see then you have to be brave enough to say see you later to those individual who don't "sharpen you" (Iron Sharpens Iron!)OK, I don't want to give away all the details of this book so go out and purchase, borrow or go to the library and take it out..It's a very "easy read" and you'll look at yourself (and Tyrese) very differently!Best Wishes on a BETTER you and PLEASE: Get Out of Your Own Way!Khalid B.
