About book How To Fail At Almost Everything And Still Win Big : Kind Of The Story Of My Life (2013)
Creator of famous Dilbert cartoon shares his favorite life hacks and secrets to successFilled with personal anecdotes and hasty generalizations, the book doesn't attempt to offer thoughtful universal advice. In fact, the author warns against taking advice from a cartoonist and settles for explaining only what works for him and why. This makes for a more honest read relative to the self-help genre but limits the scope and usefulness of the book. Some insights were quite interesting and worth considering. I liked the idea of focusing on systems instead of goals, and organizing your diet and exercise in a way that conserves will power. Wish I could give half-stars, as this is closer to a 3.5/5. It's a book about success by the guy who created "Dilbert." I'm fine with Dilbert, I really liked the animated series, but I wouldn't call myself a big fan. On top of that, Scott Adams has political views that don't align with my own. But he writes in a very relaxed style, where even when he's kind of a blowhard, I like reading what he's saying. And he says some smart things here, though not precisely anything new. In short, his success is a combination of luck and being prepared when the right situations arise through the use of systems. Chris Hardwick's "The Nerdist Way" hits on a lot of similar points. That's a smart way to live your life and reading this book made me feel I'm not doing it quite enough to achieve my goals. A good quick read, I had trouble putting it down.
