About book How Eskimos Keep Their Babies Warm: And Other Adventures In Parenting (from Argentina To Tanzania And Everywhere In Between) (2012)

This is my kind of parenting book, i.e. one that does not dole out advice or techniques, but leads me to question whether or not the "way" everyone does things HAS to be the way things are done. This is a very well researched open-minded book about different aspects of parenting in different cultures around the world, specifically how they are so different from a Westernized way, or modernized way of parenting, and why they may not be wrong. The author doesn't set out trying to prove anything or argue if anyone is right or wrong, but that we shouldn't be so quick to judge or think there is only one right way. I think it's always good to take a look at the way our own culture has played such a huge role in typical parenting techniques and be open about others in the world not having to do the same things. I really enjoyed her way of approaching the topic and how it gave me a broader view of the world. For such interesting topics, I didn't love how the book was written. I would have preferred either much more or much less personal input from the author. She relates each topic back to her family and daughter, but for the first few chapters, doing so seemed irrelevant. It was definitely interesting to read about the differences in parenting around the world, but in my opinion there wasn't enough analysis of how those choices affect the child later on in life. So what if Mayan children work when they're young? Does that make them more successful as adults? Are Asians happier because they make schoolwork a higher priority? I'd love to know more of the effects and trends of these types of parenting, so as to know whether or not they would be helpful strategies to implement.

Made me think harder about the ways in which I will raise my son but seemed to drag in some areas.

Fun & thought-provoking cultural tidbits for parenting. Reading a chapter at a time, for awhile.
