About book How Do You Tuck In A Superhero?: And Other Delightful Mysteries Of Raising Boys (2010)

Written like a blog, with each chapter little longer than a page. It tried to be humorous but felt frivolous and I wonder how it was even published. She says "One of my most lofty goals as the mother of boys is to have my sons aware of and striving for personal hygiene before they leave for college". Funny, my goals are raising kind and conscientious human beings and that seems a lot more daunting than obsessively worrying about whether they wear the same pair of shorts for six days in a row. This book was not nearly as good as I thought it would be. The author is raising five boys, so you would expect her memoir/tales of insanity to at least be funny, but though I occasionally smiled a bit, not once did this book make me laugh. The book's tone is very Hallmark-meets-homily when it could have easily maintained a sweetness imbued with humor, but just didn't. Being the mom of (one) boy, I also was somewhat put off by the absolutely constant gender stereotyping- yes, there are kernels of truth to the stereotypes, and she also points out moments when her boys defy them, but overall, the whole book is "I'm the mom to five boys and aren't boys great even though they don't like to cut their toenails (har, har-- seriously? the amount of times she refers to her kids' toenails is bordering on throat-punch-annoying)." The writing isn't horrible, but it is basically a bunch of short Guideposts-esque essays, and is probably read best while in the bathroom in short chapters here and there if you don't want to get annoyed and just wish it was over.
