Another dent in my books by Francesca Lia Block. This one is aimed at younger girls and it was actually very cute. It still managed to play into some of FLB's themes. There is a doll that is a fairy. There is a doll who hides who she really is. There are males: A G.I. Joe named guy and a stuffed bear with glasses. Then there is the doll that came with the house and is a family heirloom. The dolls are happy in their house until the day their owner is bored and jealous and sends the boys away to war. This was a cute, short read with wonderful illustrations. This was... weird. Do I even need to say that a book by FLB is weird? Probably not. The weird is the good kind, with that, "Hmmm, I think I'm slipping under the surface, there's seaweed around my feet, pulling me down and the colors are all purple and sparkly" feeling. There's whimsy and darkness and costumes and frippery. There's sort of a narrative, sort of a story, but mostly it's that FLB feeling, and if you like that, you'll like this.
Do You like book House Of Dolls (2010)?
Very sweet, but also with a dark side. The book pays homage to The Doll's House by Rumor Godden.
