About book Hope Rising: Stories From The Ranch Of Rescued Dreams (2003)

Within the first few pages of this book, it becomes abundantly clear that Ms. Meeder is somewhat of a religious zealot. At first I was irritated with her seemingly constant references to a god that I don’t believe in, but as I read through the stories about Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch and the many incredible things that happen there, I realized that the only thing that separates our experiences is who (or what) we thank for our fortune. In fact, if I just replace the word “God” with “Mother Nature” or “Random Chance,” I find myself identifying with almost every value Ms. Meeder portrays in her book— the appreciation of the powerful human-animal bond; the necessity of perseverance and healing; the beauty of a dichotomous existence.By the 200th page, I was in awe of the life Ms. Meeder created for herself and the tremendous impact she has on those around her (both of the human and four-legged variation). She has an open compassion that not many posses and the courage to make the world a better place. While Ms. Meeder would likely give credit to her chosen higher power for instilling within her the will and strength to make beautiful things happen, I am inclined to say that it is a unique and wondrous power all her own.

This truly is one of my favorite books! I cried through most of it. Although many of the stories are heartbreaking, the amazing love that God has for the neglected and abused will also bring you to tears. This book is a compilation of true stories about a woman who rescues a neglected horse from certain death. She and her husband decide to open up a rescue ranch for abused and neglected horses. But this is only the beginning of their amazing ministry! God's plans are always so much bigger than ours! For those that do not enjoy animal stories, this book is not really about the horses. It is about the children that also need someone to rescue them, in more ways than one. This book is a glimpse into the heart of God.Erin

This book is very touching. The chapters serve as individual stories that would be easy to use in a classroom. Some of the stories are too heart breaking but some would be great to use to share with the children how horses can help children learn and gain confidence. I would use these stories if interest arose among the students or if a lesson focused on horses. I would read the story and have the children write about an experience they had with a horse or another animal when they felt connected. I would also let them draw the experience. I would love to set up a field trip to a similar ranch that helped children.

I completely forgot that I had read this book years ago until I ran across the phrase "horses can be very healing." Then, bam! The cover of this book leapt to my mind. Sad stories of abused children who come to a horse farm to heal their spirits (or something along those lines). I seem to remember it being very sentimental. I may have shed a tear or two at the beginning, but I recall it getting wearisome by the end. Lots of Christian overtones. Again, it's been years since I've read this, so I may be off the mark. However, I am not really motivated to read it again.
