Twelve-year-old twins Matt and Emily share a special bond, a magical one where what they draw comes to life – at least as long as they are in the same room. Their precociousness has gotten them into trouble and with their mother they have fled to an island off the coast of Scotland. Temporarily safe they soon find themselves fighting off members of the Hollow Earth society, people who want to use the twins powers to release all the monsters in our hollow earth. While not perfect, I found this book enjoyable enough to want to read the sequels. The pacing moved along and there are a few twists to keep you guessing who is really the bad guy and what is going to happen next (and how are the twins going to get out of that one.) Both boys and girls should enjoy this book.Interestingly enough it is written by Scottish actor/singer/dancer and writer John Barrowman and his American English professor sister Carol. So, I totally admit to reading this book because of the Barrowmans, but I also have to say that were I still a middle-grader, this is the kind of book I really would have enjoyed then. With age comes the ability to recognise that yes, there were some issues with plot and that kind of thing, but I could still feel the magic and it made for an enjoyable read despite whatever misgivings I occasionally had throughout the book. I look forward to reading the next one and see how it expands upon the world that John and Carole created here.
