About book Håndteringen Af Udøde (2005)

My friend got this book for me, and I've never been a zombie fan, but I though "okay, I can give this a try". I wish I hadn't. I'm reading it, and the entire time I'm thinking "when is something going to happen?" I'm halfway through it, and there's nothing. Normally I don't put books down in the middle, so I read another 50 pages. Still nothing. These aren't zombies. They're just people that came back to life. Zombies are all "brainssss" and stuff. One of them sat down and started doing PAPERWORK. This book was not worth the read.Sorry. The writer of ”Let the Right one In” yet again re-invents a pop culture cliché, this time giving us a fresh perspective on zombies rather than vampires. Ajvide Lindqvist’s gory and disturbing descriptions of the “reliving” should satisfy even the most desensitized zombie enthusiast. But gore isn’t enough. He goes the extra mile to make his reliving truly terrifying by replacing the anonymous horde of monsters with deeply loved characters that just happen to be dead. The pain of losing a loved one and the mixed blessing of getting them back, and under what conditions you’d get them back, is personally far scarier than anything I’ve ever read or seen on the subject, although a quick look on goodreads indicates most people are still quite traditional in their zombie-expectations. The atmosphere is fantastic and the Swedish-ness adds to it: Scandinavia does zombie apocalypse in a very civilized way. The book is not without its flaws, though. The author does a decent job tying things up, but there are still some unanswered questions, and not in a good “this is open interpretation” way but rather in the “was this just inserted as a contrived storytelling device?” way. I liked the ending, but I can definitely understand why some people wouldn’t. However overall this was a very enjoyable reading experience, and I’m very much looking forward to the reported movie adaptation.
