This book chronicles events that are rapidly slipping out of the memory of living man, the last of them happening 74 years ago. It is the story of American diplomats and newsmen and women living in Germany as Hitler rose to power, and it is truly frightening. It’s the tale of a people many, not all, but many of whom simply lost themselves in a barbaric mass movement, the rise of the Nazis. For people who question the worth of liberal democratic values this is the terrifying and all too true description of what happens when the alternatives are tried. An excellent account from a wide variety of eyewitness sources....US diplomats as well as journalists....who were living in Germany at various times during the 1930s up through Hitler's declaration of war on the US in December 1941....provides a great perspective of the various views...negative as well as positive....of a wide variety of individuals who were eyewitnesses to what was happening in Germany as Hitler solidified his control of Germany and its people.
Some interesting stories to be certain, but not enough to warrant a higher recommendation.
