About book History Of A Pleasure Seeker. By Richard Mason (2011)

I feel the need to split my review a little with this one (an unlikely choice of birthday gift from my parents actually o.O). When the author is focused on descriptions of plush interiors of objet d'art, he's in top form, when it comes to characterization he's solid though uneven, and when it comes to plot he's Mills and Boonish. The plot of the novel is fluffy nonsense. Not unenjoyable, but what's stuck with me since reading this is that the first two thirds of the plot seem to have no real bearing on the remaining third. It felt a bit 'phoned in' and too obviously part of an ongoing tale. I didn't dislike the hero as much as another reviewer, but I feel the author may have liked him a little too much as Piet shades into being a sexy Mary Sue with rippling muscles. I felt I only got to know him when I wasn't being inundated with his talents. I think there was an interesting character in there- a grafter with manipulative charms but not enough experience to use them to best advantage, but the author seems at pains to ensure that the stakes aren't particularly risky for the hero. Piet never seems at any real risk, his actions largely lack consequence and everyone loves him... The other characters are decent but not given enough time to grow before the novel whisks us away on more of Piet's sensualist adventures. Maybe if we'd gotten another hundred pages with them- give the plot enough time to really thicken? I feel the character of Maarten was underused and a bit unresolved- would someone like that really react the way he does to what goes on in his household? I found this book memorable enough, and I'd be up for the sequel if it materializes, but I feel this book, whilst lushly sensual was a bit prone to premature conclusion.
