About book His Hired Girlfriend (Kiwi Bride, #1) (2014)
Ok, I thought this book would be a fun read and I was excited about the fact the hero was supposed to act gay to get the heroine`s, Alex, help with his family. It basically started okay, Alex was to be the usual ugly-duck-turned-swan girl, lots of whores, skanks, blah blah blah, after Jayden and he the perfect rich guy that you are supposed to fall in love with. Except that all of this together and more of the author`s crazyness didn`t work out too greatly in this book. First, as I`ve already mentioned, I was really looking forward to the gay act, but well, I`m still waiting for it, because it never happens, not in this story. Jayden never tries to pretend he´s gay, instead kissing the heroine on the first opportunity he has. Also, he was supposed to be heartbroken - it would be expected after catching your girlfriend of five years in bed with your best friend - but we only see the pain and self-pity when it`s convenient. Alexandra was also a pain. The author wanted to create a shy, girl next door character, which is fine by me, but Alex gets a make-over and decides she`s not that shy anymore. Please, if it were that easy... And this just reminds me of the general stupidity of all and sundry in this book. I`ll mention some that annoyed me and will have to reveal some of the story, but I really must, it was because of them that I decided to write a review after all. I`ll start saying that New Zealand is a fairly well-known country, so when you have more than one person in the book questioning where it is or if it`s a state of US? C`mon, if it were Cyprus or Sri Lankan, maybe I would forgive. Later, the best friend that betrayed Jayden, Ryan or something, tries to rape Alex by drugging her and all the stupid hero does is beat him up a couple of times and take Alex home to wear the drug off. I`m serious. Jay`s grandmother still invites a woman that helped Ryan with it to her grandchild`s wedding since her father is such a friend of the family, after all. Stupid. And when the "enemies" that were rich and beautiful and that only ever dressed designer labels the author made so sure to stress in her chapters end up being maids, I suddenly wondered if I was actually reading Cinderella and those were her step-sisters, it was that unreal. I could go on and on about what is wrong with this book but I hope for who`s reading this that I managed to convey the whys of my single star rating for this piece. Well, what else can I say? Oh, yes. I`m Brazilian and the English errors annoyed me, so I guess I don`t need to expand a lot on that. Okay, as a Pacific Islander, I love when we are featured in stories without the negative stereotypes,so automatically, Iʻd love this book. The use of Te Reo Maori, such as kumala, and Aotearoa, was a treat I wonʻt soon forget. As for the book, I have to say, lately Iʻve been reading some intense books, where the main character is not so much Alpha, as Asshole. So this book was a welcome treat. The main male character was genuinely a nice guy. And it did not detract from my enjoyment of the book at all. It did come across as predictable, but enough sass from Beth, and steel from the other female characters in the book were a nice touch. What I also found enjoyable was the fact that the bitches in the book were straight up bitches. Completely transparent, which was great! It made it easier to identify with Alex, who wasnʻt in the least fooled by what they were. Nice change!
