About book Hippie Boy: A Girl's Story (2000)

Now, the title of Hippie Boy: A Girl's Story was misleading to me. I was afraid it was about a groovy transvestite! I was also expecting a really twisted, bizarre tale. But no, it was fairly vanilla. Which was okay. Even with nothing really terrible happening, it holds your interest, and the author is a good storyteller. This is a memoir about a girl and her Mormon family. It's also about a kid who is forced to become an adult because the grown-ups around her aren't up to the task. After her parents divorce, she lives with her siblings and ultra-religious mom. But she spends summers with her free-wheeling dad. Her step-father is horrible, and makes life at home even more difficult. Though hard to read at times because of the content, I did enjoy reading this book, and am especially happy that the epilogue was so positive. I would recommend this coming of age memoir to older teens and adults. A good story, and very well-told. I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway! What would you do if your stepfather pinned you down and tried to cast Satan out of you? For thirteen-year-old Ingrid, the answer is simple: RUN.For years Ingrid Ricks yearned to escape the poverty and the suffocating brand of Mormon religion that oppressed her at home. Her chance came when she was thirteen and took a trip with her divorced dad, traveling throughout the Midwest, selling tools and hanging around with the men on his shady revolving sales crew. It felt like freedom from her controlling mother and cruel, authoritarian stepfather—but it came with its own disappointments and dysfunctions, and she would soon learn a lesson that would change her life: she can't look to others to save her; she has to save herself. The cover instantly drew me in.. It just screamed theres a story inside! The story flowed really well. It definitely broke your heart a few times. The memoir follows Ingrid as she grows up with a strict religious Mother & Step Father. .. It was hard to read at times.. the way she was treated by her stepdad and I hated how her mom didn't stand up for her. Throughout the book Ingrid spends the summers with her Dad. You can feel how much she loves her dad and thats what made the book I think. I really enjoyed following Ingrid and her adventures through out her teenage years. Hippie Boy is definitely a memoir that tugs at the heart strings! I definitely recommend this book!
