About book Hip Hop Speaks To Children: A Celebration Of Poetry With A Beat (2008)
Putting poetry to beats is a creative idea, and Nikki Giovanni does an excellent job in putting together a collection of 51 poems for the book "Hip Hop Speaks to Children: A Celebration of Poetry with a Beat." The poems are written by various authors and include various forms. There are classical poets like Langston Hughes and Gwendolyn Brooks. Then, there are some that I never would have expected to see like The Sugar Hill Gang, Tupac Shakur and Kanye West. Dr. Seuss' Green Eggs and Ham would be paired well with the poem Hams and Eggs. As a future educator, I could use this book time and time again for different ages and reading levels. I believe this book would be great for introducing a child to poetry. It's engaging, fun, and I believe readers, teachers and students alike will want to revisit over and over again. The illustrations are amazing, and the cd that came with this book brought each word and illustration to life. Genre: PoetryCopyright Date: October 2008Opinions/Thoughts:This book is beautiful. I couldn't find the CD/book at the library, so I ordered on Amazon for my nephews. I felt it is wonderful that the illustrations are from multiple artists and same with the music. I believe poetry speaks volumes for children and adults and it truly is celebrated in this book. It has historical meaning, and respectful inferences for our past. Nevertheless, my nephews absolutely love it!
