My boys absolutely love Henry Huggins. These books may be over fifty years old, but the world of Klickitat Street still rings true. Families still have dogs. Little sisters are still pests. Neighbor kids still have squabbles. And boys still have dreams.Henry and the Paper Route, ten-year-old Henry Huggins dreams of having a paper route of his very own. He fancies himself a true businessman, and he wouldn’t mind a little extra money to string up a telephone line between his room and that of his best friend, Robert. The trouble is, the newspaper only hires eleven-year-olds. When he does finally earn a route, four-year-old Ramona threatens to ruin everything.If you haven’t noticed, I’m a pretty big Beverly Cleary fan. There’s an innocence to her stories that I find refreshing. She does such a great job inventing characters that every kid can relate to, and their interaction is entertaining. Her stories always reminds me of my own childhood on Marcus Street. And my boys, who are roughly the same ages as the character and still living out their own squabbles with their own neighborhood kids, can’t wait to hear what happens next. No matter that the book was written during their grandfathers’ childhood, kids will be kids. And a writer with the ability to create a story with such long-lasting appeal is quite a writer indeed.
This installment of the Henry Huggins series does not disappoint! As soon as I read the final sentence and closed the book, Isabelle shouted, "Five stars!" In this book, Henry shows compassion, initiative, drive, and determination. He sees four adorable kittens and goes to great lengths to keep them from being sent to the pound. He wants a paper route, and by golly, he will convince Mr. Capper that he is responsible enough to have one! His school has a paper drive, and - inspired by an off-hand suggestion from a friend - he comes up with an idea to collect the most paper. Henry quickly becomes overwhelmed with the success of his idea, but he follows through and keeps his word. I LOVE that Henry typed up his advertisements on a typewriter and used carbon paper! It was really fun talking to Isabelle about how Henry had to do things the old-fashioned way because home computers, printers, and photocopiers weren't invented yet. It was interesting, too, to see how the primary definition of a word can change over a few decades. To Henry, a "premium" is something that comes free with the purchase of something else, while I generally associate the noun "premium" with the cost of insurance.

I liked Henry and The Paper Route since Henry had to face not being 11 since he wanted a paper route. So later his friend Scooter McCarthy lends him his paper route for a bit until sometime they get in a argument and does not let Henry have his paper route. Until later Henry gets his own paper route.I would not reccomend this book to somebody who does not like Scooter.

Instead he ends up with a new kitten, names her Nosy, and thereby upsets good old Ribsy.After another adventure with paper, known as a paper drive, in which Henry's clever advertising method succeeds way beyond his wildest dreams, bad girl Ramona's bad ideas help Henry finally get his route.I will never forget the summer my sons had a paper route. I worked long hours that summer, including weekends. So the boys often spent weekends in the country with their cousins. Meaning I had to get up at dawn and do their route, often accompanied by thunderstorms. Wish I'd known about Henry back then. Me and the boys would have had some good laughs reading it.
