In a world that screams technology, we often find ourselves at times being enslaved to such. We tend to forget to take a break and just relax. When Lydia's gadgets fail her, she goes to her family for attention. However, they are too wrapped up with their gadgets, she decides to venture outside. She explores her enviroment and is at ease with it. She forgets about everything until her phone rings and her parents are demanding to know where she is at. She then goes back home bearing gifts to each of her family members and that's when reality hits. How much is their dependency on technology and its many gadgets? Where can the line be drawn to maintain a healthy equilibrium between nature and technology? Will they be successful? I do not agree at all with the review who blasted this as "smarmy and preachy" but also didn't like the shift to pure fantasy in the middle. It's. A. Kid's. Book. Sometimes I want to tear my hair out because people overanalyze and nitpick down to the tiniest, most inconsequential detail.If I could sum this up in one word it would be "joyous." The drawings--especially once the girl leaves technology behind--are absolutely bursting with joy and wonder. Great story accomplished with the most basic of text.
